MACC wins 21st game over 4th ranked Cardinals

2/6/2017
The Moberly Area Community College Men’s Basketball Team defeated Mineral Area College 63-58 on Saturday evening before a near capacity crowd at the Fitzsimmons-John Arena.  The game featured the top two teams in NJCAA Region 16 at this time as Mineral Area was ranked 4th in the latest NJCAA National Poll while Moberly is currently 11th ranked nationally.  After going ahead 5-0 to start the game, Moberly saw Mineal Area come back and gain a 26-14 margin with five minutes remaining in the half.  However, the Greyhounds rallied to get within 28-26 at the half.  Mineral Area gained a 40-31 lead within 7 minutes of the second half as Moberly struggled to score again.  Then the Greyhounds started their comeback behind sophomore guards Brandon Better and Jabari Antwine. They eventually gained the lead at 46-45 and stretched the lead to 61-52 before hitting enough free throws down the stretch to hold on.  Better lead Moberly in scoring with 18 points(13-17 from the free throw line) while Delfincko Bogan added 12 and Antwine contributed 11 points.  Culbertson lead Mineral Area with 15 points and Thomson scored 9 .

“It was a great college basketball game behind two very good defensive teams,” said Moberly Coach Patrick Smith, “Points were hard to come by for both teams.  Mineral Area does such a great job executing on offense and we were able to change defenses some and get enough stops.  I really applaud our players for coming from behind twice tonight from deficits by hanging in there and playing one possession at a time against a really good team.”

Moberly improved to 21-2 on the season and 4-1 in Region 16 while Mineral Area dropped their first contest of the year to be 24-1 and 5-1 in regional play.  Moberly returns to action tonight, February 6 as they travel to Ottumwa, Iowa to play nationally ranked Indian Hills CC with a 7:00 pm tip off.
