Lady Greyhounds Win 4th Straight

1/16/2012

The MACC Lady Greyhounds fell behind early, but used a 13-0 run midway through the first half and never trailed again as they defeated the J.V. team from Missouri Valley by a score of 63-38 at Fitzsimmons-John Arena. It was the fourth win a row for MACC since returning from Christmas Break.

“You never know how a group is going to respond after taking eight days off,” said head coach Chad Killinger. “Every season is different, but this group returned to campus in the right frame of mind and it has been good to get these wins with the majority of our remaining schedule being Region 16 contests.”

After leading by 10, 32-22, at halftime the Lady Greyhounds put the game away in the opening minutes of the second half. MACC used a 15-2 run to take a 23 point lead at 47-24, and eventually led by as many as 25 points on two occasions in securing their 11th win of the season.

MACC’s defense continued to be the difference for them this season as they forced 32 Missouri Valley turnovers, while holding their 15th opponent in 17 games to 60 or less points. “We didn’t shoot particularly well,” said Killinger. “But you have to find a way to continue to defend, even when your shots aren’t falling, and if you can do that then you give yourself a chance in every game.”

Ashley Stevenson led the Lady Greyhounds in scoring with 17 points, while also contributing five steals. Jessica Bygate joined Stevenson in double figures with 14 points to go along with seven rebounds, while Mykel Boyd garnered her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 steals. Shanevian Holden continued her recent string of solid performances with eight points and seven rebounds. ShanToria Taylor led the team in assists with five.

MACC will travel to Sedalia, MO to take on State Fair Community College next Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. That contest will begin a three game road stretch in Region 16 play for the Lady Greyhounds with one non-Region home game mixed into the action.
