#8 ranked MACC improves to 24-3

2/14/2018
On the day they moved up one spot to #8 in the NJCAA National Poll, the Moberly Area Comm. College Men’s Basketball Team went on the road to Kansas City, Missouri and defeated Penn Valley 102-89 Tuesday evening. MACC jumped out to an early 22-9 lead before Penn Valley got back within one at 35-34 before the Hounds extended to a 52-40 halftime lead. Moberly then went on a 16-2 spurt to start the second half and eventually extended the lead to 72-45 before Penn Valley made a late run for the final score. Freshman guard Billy Thomas continued his hot streak as he lead Moberly in scoring with 22 points(5-5 from three point range, 5th straight 20 plus point game), Alonzo Verge had 19 points and 8 assists, Dallas Morgan contributed 15 points(3-5 from three point range), Randy Miller added 13 while Tyree White and JaQualis Matlock added 10 points each in their balanced attack. Sean Miller Moore added 8 points and 9 rebounds. Moberly shot 10 for 16 from three point range. Joseph Mebaley lead Penn Valley in scoring with 19 points while Malik Barnett, Darius Rice and Thomas Bell had 12 points each.

“After two seasons of not being successful at Penn Valley,” said Coach Patrick Smith, “It’s very satisfying to go up there and play reasonably well. Thought we did a very good job of establishing the early lead, got bad offensively and defensively during the down time the first half, then really finished the first half up well and went on a great run to start the second. Very good to establish the mid second half lead, then thought we got sloppy and need to eliminate those segments of the game. Now it’s back to Region 16 Saturday night against a good State Fair Team.”

Moberly improved to 24-3 on the season while Penn Valley drops to 13-11. The Greyhounds return to action Saturday night in a double header against State Fair with the women’s contest at 5 pm and the Men’s game at 7:00.
