Freshman Alonzo Verge, Jr. sets single game scoring record with 51 points

The Moberly Area Comm. College Greyhounds defeated host Highland CC(Ill.) 93-90 in overtime to win it’s third straight William Baer Tournament in Freeport, Illinois on Saturday evening. Moberly fell behind 22-8 to start the championship game but eventually claimed a 35-34 halftime lead. The game featured an unbelievable 17 ties and 30 lead changes as the entire second half was back and forth. After Shareef Smith hit a three pointer to put Highland up 85-82, Moberly PG Alonzo Verge, Jr. came back and hit a three pointer with 12 seconds left to send the game to overtime. Moberly grabbed the early lead in OT and survived a last second three point miss by Highland to gain the championship. Verge lead Moberly with an unbelievable performance as he scored a Moberly single game record 51 points along with 4 assists and 4 rebounds while sophomore guard Randy Miller added 17 points. JJ Matthews and Sean Miller-Moore had 12 rebounds each for the Greyhounds. Highland was lead in scoring by Luka Barisic with 25 points(4 made threes), Josh Carter scored 19 points, JayQuan McCloud had 17 while Smith added 16 points.

Moberly won it’s third game in 26 hours in the tournament and improved to 13-1 on the season.
