MACC’s Pat Smith Earns Milestone 900th Career Victory
Greyhounds defeat Southeastern Iowa 92–82 on Nov. 22
Moberly Area Community College is celebrating a historic achievement for Head Men's Basketball Coach and Athletic Director Pat Smith, who secured his 900th career coaching win on November 22 as the Greyhounds earned a 92–82 victory over Southeastern Iowa.
The milestone adds another highlight to an extraordinary career that has made Smith one of the most successful and respected coaches in NJCAA men's basketball history. Entering the 2025–26 season, Smith ranked second among all active NJCAA coaches in total victories and No. 5 on the NJCAA's all-time wins list.
A Legacy Built at Moberly—and Across the Nation
Smith, a familiar figure in Greyhound Nation, has built a powerhouse program during multiple tenures at MACC. He first led the Greyhounds from 2001–04, guiding two of those teams to national tournament appearances. Since returning in 2012, he has transformed MACC into one of the most consistent contenders in the nation.
During his time at Moberly, Smith has:
- Compiled a 396–156 record prior to the 25–26 season
- Achieved nine consecutive full seasons with 25 or more wins
- Captured 8 Regional Championships and 6 District Titles
- Made 8 NJCAA National Tournament appearances
- Coached 11 teams that finished in the NJCAA Top 20
- Seen more than 130 Greyhounds earn NCAA Division I scholarships
Smith's ability to elevate programs extends far beyond Moberly. His coaching career includes successful tenures at Trinity Valley CC, Wabash Valley College, Jacksonville College, Lincoln Land CC, St. Catharine College, Barton County, and Sue Bennett College. He has also coached at the University of Miami (assistant) and served as head coach at NCAA Division II Bemidji State.
Known as a program builder, Smith has repeatedly turned struggling teams into winners. Highlights include leading St. Catharine to 58 wins in three seasons following a two-year stretch with just three total victories, averaging 20 wins at Lincoln Land CC after decades of losing seasons, and averaging 27 wins at Wabash Valley College—including two national tournament appearances—after the program endured three losing seasons before his arrival.
National Recognition
Smith's long list of achievements has earned him 21 Coach of the Year honors and induction into the NJCAA Hall of Fame, Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and the NJCAA Region 16 Hall of Fame.
With more than four decades of coaching excellence, Smith entered the 2025–26 season with an overall record of 893–434—a number that now surpasses the 900-win mark after the Greyhounds' Nov. 22 victory.
Celebrating a Milestone Moment
The MACC community proudly congratulates Coach Pat Smith on this remarkable achievement. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to student-athletes have shaped the lives of hundreds of Greyhounds and elevated MACC Basketball to national prominence.
Congratulations, Coach Smith, on your 900th career win—and thank you for continuing to build the legacy of Greyhound Basketball.
