Bio

Patrick Smith is no stranger to Greyhound Basketball. He coached the team from 2001–04—earning two national tournament appearances—and returned to MACC in 2012 as Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Athletic Director. During his tenure at Moberly Area Community College, Smith has won eight Regional Championships and six District Titles, with eight appearances in the NJCAA National Tournament. Prior to the 2025–26 campaign, he compiled a 396–156 record at Moberly, including nine consecutive full seasons with 25 or more wins, as well as five Regional and four District Titles in the last seven seasons. Eleven of his Moberly teams have finished the season ranked in the NJCAA Top 20.

Smith has coached more than 130 players who went on to earn NCAA Division I scholarships.

A long-time veteran in the junior college coaching ranks, Smith has held positions at Trinity Valley CC (2006–12), Wabash Valley College, Jacksonville College, Lincoln Land CC, St. Catharine College, Barton County, and Sue Bennett College. He has also coached at the University of Miami (assistant coach) and served as head coach at NCAA Division II Bemidji State.

Turning around struggling programs has been one of Smith’s trademarks. He won 58 games in three years at St. Catharine College after the program had totaled only three wins in the previous two seasons. At Lincoln Land CC, he inherited a long-standing losing program and averaged 20 wins per season from 1988–91; the school had recorded just one winning season in the previous 27 years. At Wabash Valley College, he averaged 27 wins per season with two national tournament appearances in three years, following three consecutive losing seasons before his arrival. His 1992–93 squad finished seventh in the NJCAA National Tournament, and his 2001–02 Moberly team placed fifth at Hutch.

Entering the 2025–26 season, Smith holds an overall coaching record of 893–434, with 15 straight full seasons of 20 or more wins. This ranks him second among all active NJCAA men’s basketball coaches. According to the NJCAA record book, he stands at No. 5 on the all-time list for most coaching victories. Smith has earned 21 Coach of the Year honors and has been inducted into the NJCAA Hall of Fame, the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, and the NJCAA Region 16 Hall of Fame.

“I am so grateful to be the coach of the MACC Greyhounds,” Smith said. “It has been an honor and a privilege to lead this program as both Head Coach and Athletic Director, and I extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Evelyn Jorgenson and Dr. Jeff Lashley for allowing me to serve in this position. I am very proud of the success our program has achieved; however, we aspire to accomplish even more and continue striving for the next level. The success of the program at Moberly is the result of the combined efforts of the College and our Booster and community support, and I am deeply appreciative of everyone who supports our athletic program.”

Smith is the proud parent of four children—Jared (and his wife Chelsea), Cameron, Sloane, and Scout—and the grandfather of two, Blayze and Dottie Lynn.
