MACC Women’s Basketball Hits Its Stride, Winning Six of Last Seven

The Moberly Area Community College Women's Basketball team is heating up. After a challenging 0–3 start, the Greyhounds have surged to a 7–5 record and are currently riding a three-game winning streak—having captured six of their last seven contests, including an emphatic 82–39 win over Lincoln Trail College on December 2.

Head Coach Chevis Thompson credits the turnaround to growing confidence and improved chemistry.

"I think chemistry—playing together as a team—and some of our players really starting to become confident has been huge," Thompson said. "Once we got a couple of key victories, they saw that what we're doing works. They realized, 'We can actually play a little bit.'"

Challenging Schedule by Design

The Greyhounds' early losses didn't come as a surprise to Thompson, who intentionally front-loaded the schedule with powerhouse opponents.

"A lot of teams won't play the teams we played early on," he noted. "Two of those three teams will be at the national tournament. We could have started off with an easier schedule, but that's not going to get us ready for conference play."

That early test appears to be paying off as the team settles into a balanced and fast-paced identity built around transition scoring and shared offensive production.

Balanced Scoring Drives Success

MACC has developed into a deep scoring unit, with several players consistently contributing:

Thompson praised the team's balanced attack, noting that five players reached double figures in their most recent win.

He has also seen leadership emerge within this brand-new roster. Cohen and Thivierge have become the anchors—Cohen leading by example with relentless work ethic, and Thivierge serving as the vocal floor leader.

A Fast, Fearless Identity

Thompson describes the Greyhounds as a team built for speed and pressure.

"Once we get out and start running, it's really hard for teams to stay with us," he said. "We score well in transition, and that's becoming our identity."

Defensive improvement and ball security remain key goals, especially with tough Region 16 opponents looming.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming stretch will test MACC with several familiar foes:

  • Dec. 5 – at Wabash Valley (who the Hounds defeated 87–62 on opening night of the Thanksgiving Classic)
  • Dec. 8 – vs. Southeastern CC (a chance to avenge an early one-point loss)
  • Dec. 15 – at Lincoln Trail
  • Dec. 16 – at John A. Logan (a rematch of the season opener)

The Greyhounds are gaining momentum at the perfect time, and their head coach believes they're only getting stronger.

"Some of our players are fearless," Thompson said. "It doesn't matter who's across the line—they're going to go after them. If we stay healthy and keep trusting each other, we're going to be tough to beat."

With confidence building and chemistry clicking, the MACC Women's Basketball team is rapidly becoming a force to watch this season.
